Why Bethany and
Why House of Lazarus?

Bethany is recorded in the New Testament as a small village in Judaea, the home of the siblings Mary, Martha, and Lazarus.

Bethany means house of affliction.

That house of affliction became the place of comfort, rest, and consolation for our Lord in the last days He walked on our Earth, when He said

“My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death”

In His passion week He was seeking comfort in Bethany, inside the house of Lazarus.

We built our little Bethany in Engadine. Inside it we put House of Lazarus.

We are so eager for people in our local area to find comfort, rest, and consolation in our little Bethany.

House of Lazarus extends the same helping and comforting hands to people outside our local area, from the homeless in Sydney CBD to people in the villages of Egypt and Cambodia and wherever our Lord chooses to send us.

Cambodia Medical Mission 2024

At Bethany Medical Centre, caring for people isn’t just something we do within the heart of the Sutherland Shire at Engadine — it’s something we’re passionate about wherever the need arises.

Recently, we had the privilege of partnering with Thanksgiving Australia, Light for All Cambodia, and Engadine Central Pharmacy on a medical mission trip to Cambodia. The trip was organized by Thanksgiving Australia https://www.thanksgivingaustralia.com/

They even provided free medications for the patients and gifts for the little ones.

Over several inspiring days, we visited three villages and an orphanage, providing free medical care, essential medications, and heartfelt support to hundreds of people in underserved communities.

Our team included 3 doctors, 2 pharmacists, 2 dentists, a physiotherapist, a podiatrist, and around 24 incredible helpers and teachers — all giving their time, skills, and energy to make a positive difference. From treating health concerns to connecting with local families and children, every moment was driven by compassion and the desire to help others.

It was an unforgettable and rewarding experience. Beyond the clinical work, we connected with local families, listened to their stories, and shared meaningful moments that reminded us why we do what we do. From smiling children to grateful elders, every interaction left a lasting impression on our team.

We’re grateful to our partners and supporters who made it all possible, and we’re excited to share a few photos from the trip below — we hope they bring you a glimpse of the joy we witnessed.

Dr Soliman is already planning the next trip for 2025 — and we’re looking forward to continuing this important work.
